Halloween
In America people celebrate Halloween on the 31st of
October. Children dress up as black cats, skeletons,
goblins, witches and monsters. They make jack-olanterns. So the traditional colours of Halloween are
black, orange and yellow. Children usually say ‘trick
or treat’ («угощенье или шутка») It means that the
people, who live next door, can give the boys and girls
money, fruit or sweets or children can play a joke on
them (над ними шутят).
Christmas
On the 25th of December there is the greatest holiday of all in
England – Christmas. People send X-mas cards to their
friends and relatives. People buy a Christmas tree and
decorate it with toys, coloured balls and lights.
Children wake up early to find stockings full of small presents
on their bed.
St. Valentine’s day
St Valentine’s Day comes on February 14 in America and
Great Britain. It is not a legal or a national holiday. A
“valentine” may mean a special greeting-card or a little present.
Flowers and sweets are favourite presents which sweethearts
send to each other. Valentine candy is packed in red or pink
heart-shaped boxes. Valentines are special greeting cards. They
are often coloured red, have red pictures of hearts.
