CHILDHOOD, FAMILY
Stephen Hawking was born on January 8, 1942
in Oxford, where his parents moved from
London, fearing the bombing of German
aircraft . His father is Frank Hawking, who
worked as a researcher at the Hampstead
Medical Center. Mother, Isabel Hawking,
worked there as a secretary. In addition to
Stephen's family, two younger sisters (Philip and
Mary) and adopted brother Edward were
brought up
EDUCATION
In 1962, Stephen graduated from the
University of Oxford (bachelor’s degree), and
in 1966 at Trinity Hall College, University of
Cambridge, received his Ph.D., defended his
thesis "Properties of expanding universes"
Since 1965, Hawking at the University of
Cambridge worked at the Institute of
Theoretical Astronomy
DISABILITY
Already in the early 1960s, signs of amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis began to appear in Hawking,
which subsequently led to paralysis [But the
disease did not progress so quickly, and he
began to live only in the late 1960s
In 1985, Stephen Hawking became seriously ill,
he had pneumonia. After a series of operations,
he underwent a tracheostomy, and Hawking lost
his ability to speak. Mechanical friends modified
Stephen's wheelchair by installing an on-board
computer with a speech synthesizer, which
Hawking managed first with the help of his right
index finger, and subsequently with a mimic
cheek muscle, opposite to which he secured the
sensor..
Hawking’s voice had an American accent and
at the time of his death had not been created
for other similar devices for many years.
Himself Hawking said that, as a Professor of
mathematics, he never received any
mathematical education since middle school.
In his first year of teaching at Oxford Hawking
had read the textbook ahead of their own
students for two weeks.
SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES
Hawking's main research focus is cosmology
and quantum gravity. His main achievements
are: the use of thermodynamics to describe
black holes
THE POPULARIZATION OF SCIENCE
Hawking is actively involved in the

he published a book, A Brief History of Time,
which became a bestseller.
