To: [email protected] Igor Ustyuzhyn Kharkov National University [email protected] HESP Presentation (2012): The Thirty-First of June (Made in the USSR) Course: BRITISH LITERATURE: SCREENED IN THE USSR Since Lenin’s famous dictum “Cinema is the most important art for us” the Soviet ideology had paid special attention to movies. For obvious reasons the censors were especially tough on film directors who based their films on the books coming from the Capitalist camp. We will see (and discuss) the way the Soviet Ministry of Education shaped the British literary canon and what the film directors had to do in order to let their films go through the censorship. The course is designed primarily for the students of History interested in the Soviet Civilization and the students of Literature interested in the history of interpretation. The aims of the course are to introduce students to influential texts and to teach them to read a film. SYLLABUS Lecture 1: William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616). Part 1. Comedies.
