The problem of relationship between the society and the environment has existed since the appearance
of the first civilizations. Man’s influence on the environment can be estimated. Another matter is the
influence of geological and geographical environment on formation of culture and history of mankind. In
conditions of formation of the Ancient Greek civilization this influence was exclusively significant at all
stages of its development.

The article touches upon the problem of genre defining of so called sea trilogy «To the Ends of the
Earth» by William Golding. The novels «Rites of Passage», «At Close Quarters» and «Fire Down Below»
are usually considered as novels written in the traditionally English genre of a sea novel. In the present
article the trilogy is analyzed from the point of view of its correspondence to the requirements of a classic
sea novel.
