Troll-A is an offshore drilling platform off the west coast
of Norway.
It is high 472 meters;
Underwater 369 meters;
Net weight of 656,000 tons;
Weighing 1.2 million tons when towed.
The Troll-A platform is 303 meters below the sea
surface.
Accomplishments
Its towing into the North Sea in 1996 was the
subject of a television broadcast and set a world
record, entering the Guinness Book of World
Records as the «largest offshore gas platform»
ever moved by man on the surface of the Earth.
It is operated by «Statoil».
Location
The platform was assembled in Norway and
then moved offshore.
The platform was towed more than 200
kilometers from Vats in the northern
Rogaland region to the Troll region, 80
kilometers northwest of Bergen.
Upgrading
At the Aker Stord
shipyard, the top of the
170 x 51 m platform
remained 6.5 m above
the water, with the help
of barges it was put in
place, the water was
gradually pumped out
and the top rose 30 m
above the water.
