The end of the war.
The greatest test for the Soviet Union was the Great
Patriotic War. It caused damage to the economy and
demography of the country, it took years to restore
pre-war indicators. In addition, the war had a
number of foreign policy outcomes.
Demographic
losses
• The result of the Second World
War was a significant decline in the
population of the USSR. Soldiers died
in battle, in captivity and from
wounds. In the occupied territory,
the population was decreasing due
to the occupation policy. Part of the
population that cooperated with the
occupiers left the country. In
addition, there was a decline in the
rear caused by a number of factors:
deportations, malnutrition, illness,
conscription of almost all men from
18 to 50 into the army.
Socio-economic results of
the Second World War
• The war caused enormous damage to the national economy.
According to official data, 1,710 cities and towns were destroyed, as
well as about 70 thousand villages and hamlets. In addition, they
needed to be restored:
• 65 thousand km of railways.
• 13 thousand bridges.
• 31 thousand factories, factories and other enterprises.
• A large number of housing stock.
• In general, the USSR lost a third of its national wealth and great
damage was done to the agriculture of the areas where the fighting
was conducted. The recovery of the country's economy began in
1943 in the liberated areas and ended by the end of 1949
Foreign policy results of
the Second World War
• The USSR became one of the founding countries
of the UN and received a permanent seat on the
Security Council. Russian has become the working
language of the UN, it has become more widely
studied in the world. Due to the beginning of the
Cold War, the creation of a bloc of socialist
countries began, it included states that were
formed in those territories where the Soviet Army
could reach. The exceptions were Yugoslavia,
Austria and Albania. The latter was liberated by its
own Red partisans by the end of 1944. After the
end of the Second World War, the USSR needed to
establish relations with Japan, Germany (Germany
and the GDR since the end of 1949), Finland.
