Niagara Falls a complex of waterfalls on the river Niagara, located on the border
of the United States and Canada.It is located on the connecting Lake Erie and
Ontario (and separating the US state New York from Canada) the Niagara River
about thirty kilometers from the city of Buffalo.
The height of the ledge of Niagara Falls is 53 m. Niagara Falls is considered one of
the most powerful in the world, a huge mass of water passes through it. The noise
of the waterfall can be heard at a distance of 25 km, and near the roar of the
water is so strong that you can not hear a human voice. No wonder the word
"Niagara "means"rumbling water" in Indian.
The retreat of the falls
The waters of the Niagara River gradually erode the ledge of Niagara Falls. The
rocks that make up the ledge break off and are carried downstream by the water.
So, in the summer of 1956, as a result of erosion, a significant part of the ledge
collapsed. A large power plant built near the waterfall was destroyed. Experts
believe that the waterfall annually retreats upstream by an average of 1 m. Thus,
in 20 thousand years, the waterfall will disappear.
