Grade 4 English: Irregular Plural Nouns
Read and remember!
The regular plural form of nouns is made by
adding -s or -es to the end of the word.
For example:
one class – two classes
one church – three churches
one fox
– four foxes
The irregular plural form of nouns changes
completely and has to be remembered!
For example:
one child - two children
one man - two men

Some irregular nouns end in “f” or “fe”. To make such nouns
plural, you change the “f” or “fe” to “ve” and add “s”.
More than one elf = elves
More than one shelf = shelves
More than one wolf = wolves
More than one calf = calves

More than one leaf = leaves

Some irregular plural nouns have the same spelling as their
singular form: scissors, pants, bison, deer, and sheep
Some animal nouns become plural by keeping the same spelling
as their singular form or by receiving -s or -es.

fishes
