In 1620, a group of people, the Pilgrims, leave Plymouth England for religious

There are 102 people on the ship, called the Mayflower.
They want to start a new life in America and practice their religion in freedom.
They land at a place, which they call New England, on the north-east coast of
America in December.
They are far from their home, and life is hard.
They have little food and know little about their new home.
Their first winter is very cold and many of them become sick and die.
However, the Native Americans (Indians) who live there give them a hand.
They teach the Pilgrims how to grow corn, fish, hunt for food and how to survive
in America.
They show the pilgrims how to build better houses.
The Pilgrims work hard and the harvest grows well.
By November 1621, they all have food and a home.
The Pilgrims decide to thank the Native Americans and invite them to a big
dinner.
The dinner lasts for three days.
They give thanks for the good harvest and their happy year in a new country.
This dinner is the first Thanksgiving.

Celebration of Thanksgiving Day.
Thanksgiving Day comes on the 4-th Thursday in November. It’s a legal holiday
celebrated throughout the USA. Special religious services are held in the
morning. Thanksgiving is a special day for families to get together and give
thanks for different things. They usually do it this way: ''I give thanks for being
here with my family and for being well. I give thanks for a healthy year, a good
study, and for meeting my new friends.''
Preparing and eating a large meal is a central part of Thanksgiving celebrations.
Thanksgiving menus usually include stuffed turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed
potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn and pumpkin pie. Apple cider is the drink of the
day.
Many Americans have their holiday meal while watching football games on
television. Traditionally, two National Football League (NFL) teams, the Detroit
Lions and the Dallas Cowboys, play games on Thanksgiving Day.
Macy’s department store holds its annual Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York
City. Celebrities, floats, bands, and balloons appear in the parade. Santa Claus
arrives at the end. His coming marks the beginning of the Christmas season.
Stores, classrooms, and homes are decorated with turkeys, pilgrims, Indians,
wreaths of dried flowers and vegetables. Horns of plenty are very popular
emblems of Thanksgiving.
Charitable organizations serve dinners to needy people. They also send baskets
