The national festival YSYAKH
Historical legends and folklore connect the appearance of this
festival with the name of cultural hero Ellyai Bootur legendary great-parent of the people Sakha. It was he who
arranged YSYAKH in the sacred plain “US KHATYN”
considered ever since to be a cradle of the nation. According
to the Yakut calendar, on June 22 the longest day - the first
day of solstice - begins. It serves as a signal for the beginning
of the organised ritual festival - meeting of the New Year.
YSYAKH is a traditional festival of Sakha people. It embodies
meeting of the short Yakut summer, awakening of nature,
bringing near welfare and abundance. The Yakut people
celebrate a solstitial ceremony, Ysyakh, involving tethering a
horse to a pole and circle dancing around it. Betting on horse
racing would often take place afterward.

Ivan Kupala was the old Russian name for John the
Baptist. Up to the present day, the Russian
Midsummer Night (or Ivan's Day) is known as
one of the most expressive Russian folk and
pagan holidays. Ivan Kupala Day is the day of
summer solstice celebrated in Russia on July 6.
This is a pagan fertility rite, which has been
accepted into the Orthodox Christian calendar.
Nights on the Eve of Ivan Kupala inspired Modest
Mussorgsky to create his Night on Bald
Mountain.
