Verbal Adverbs and aspect
VA have no tense (time of the action depends
on the main verb), but do have aspect!
Imperfective = simultaneous with main verb:
Читая её письмо, он смеялся.
Читая её письма, он всегда смеётся.
Читая её письмо, он будет смеяться.

Perfective = action happens before the main
verb:
Прочитав её письмо, он заплакал.
Прочитав её письмо, он всегда плачет.
Прочитав её письмо, он заплачет.
Деепричастия usage and meaning:
VA cover many different meanings
Влюбившись в подругу, Лена ушла от мужа.
= Когда Лена влюбилась в подругу, она ушла от
мужа.
= После того, как Лена влюбилась в подругу, она
ушла от мужа.
= Так как Лена влюбилась в подругу, она ушла от
мужа.
(but none of these expressions appears with the VA)

Watch out! English may contain
words not found in Russian!
Он женился на ней, не зная, что она лесбиянка.
= He married her without knowing she was a lesbian.
Она ушла от него, не узнав, что и он голубой.
= She left him without finding out that he too was gay.

Formation of imperfective verbal adverbs
Start with 3rd person plural:

Remove the ending:

(remember spelling rules, and add -сь for reflexives)
Form imperfective verbal adverbs from the
following verbs:

спешить
спеша
заниматься
занимаясь
улыбаться

Verbs in авай keep the
suffix:
вставать
вставая
давать
давая

Some verbs have substitute forms
(usually the predicted form means something else)
хотеть => желая (from желать, desire)
(хотя means “although”)
ждать => ожидая (from ожидать, expect)
(ждя just sounds too strange)
смотреть => глядя (from глядеть,
glance/look)
(смотря means “depending on”)
