Exercise 10. Read the description of Aunt Emily.
My Aunt Emily
Of all my relatives, I like my Aunt Emily the best. She’s my mother’s
youngest sister. She has never married, and she lives alone in a small village. She’s
in her fifties, but she is still quite young in spirit. She has a fair complexion, thick
brown hair which she wears short, and dark brown eyes. She has a kind face, and
when you meet her, the first thing you notice is her lovely, warm smile. Her face is
a little wrinkled now, but I think she is still rather attractive. She is the sort of
person you can always go to if you have a problem.
She likes reading and gardening, and she goes for long walks over the hills
with her dog. She’s a very active person. Either she is making something, or
mending something or doing something to help others. She does the shopping for
some of the old people in the village. She’s extremely generous, but not very
tolerant with the people who don’t agree with her. I hope that I am as happy and
cheerful as she is when I’m her age.
Go through the text again and find:

Think of someone in your family. Write a similar description of a member of your
family. Include the following:

Exercise 11. Read the text and explain how beauty was understood at different
times.
What makes us beautiful?
When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see? Chances are you’ve
got a feature or two that could be improved after all, nobody’s perfect. But how
far would you go to be more attractive?
A recent survey found that it’s no longer just women who want to become
more beautiful: men are quickly catching up. In Britain, for example, 34 percent of
men are not satisfied with their bodies.
And if creams and lotions can’t do the trick both sexes are ready to submit to
the surgeon’s knife in search of perfection.
Every day we are bombarded with beautiful faces. They smile at us from
advertising hoardings, TV screens and magazines. Their perfect smiles, flawless
cheekbones and wide eyes fuel the multi-billion-dollar beauty industry.
But what exactly is beauty? For centuries men have tried to come up with a
mathematical formula for beauty. The ancient Greeks thought the number three
was the answer a beautiful face was one that could be divided into three exactly
equal parts, hairline to eyebrows, eyebrows to mouth, and finally mouth to chin.
The Victorians believed that a face with great beauty possessed the average
features of all other faces. However, this has now been debunked by recent
research which found that the most attractive faces have higher cheekbones, a
thinner jaw and larger eyes relative to the size of the face than an average one.
Another survey shows that there is no such thing as the beautiful face and all
sorts of non-standard looks still count as beautiful.
The truth is that when it comes to choosing a mate, beauty is still in the eye
of the beholder. Some of us make the oddest choices.
So the message is: if you’ve got flaunt it but if you haven’t, just make the
most of what you’ve got!
Exercise 12. In the following dialogue, a police officer is questioning an eye-witness.
After you have read it, look at the drawings and pick out the person you think the
witness is describing.
Police officer:
How old do you think he was?
Witness:
Well, he was quite young. In his late twenties, I'd say.
Police officer:
And was he tall?
Witness:
Yes, quite tall; taller than me, anyway. I'm 160 cm so he must
have been about 175 to 180.
Police officer:
What about his build?
Witness:
Well, he was fairly slim. Not a bit muscular. Maybe even a bit
skinny.
Police officer:
And what did he look like?
Witness:
Not very handsome. He had dark hair, but I can't really
remember if it was long or short. But it was swept back. He didn't have a fringe or
anything.
Police officer:
And did you notice what he was wearing?
Witness:
Oh yes! He was wearing jeans and this horrible striped sweater.
Oh, and he had white trainers too.
Police officer:
Anything else?
Witness:
No, I don't think so. Oh, wait! He had an earring. In his left ear,
I think.
Police officer:
Right, thank you. You've been very helpful.
Now make up and act out your own dialogues, using the given pictures.
Whoever takes the part of the policeman must ask the questions and pick out the
person he or she thinks the witness is describing. When you have done it once,
change parts and do it again.

Analysis Over 60 points: Others see you as someone they should "handle with
