Литургия: 10:00 a.m. The Beheading of St. John the Baptist August 29/September 11 The Beheading of the Prophet, Forerunner of the Lord, John the Baptist: The Evangelists Matthew (Mt 14:1-12) and Mark (Mk 6:14-29) provide accounts about the martyric end of John the Baptist in the year 32 after the Birth of Christ. Following the Baptism of the Lord, St. John the Baptist was locked up in prison by Herod Antipas, the Tetrarch (ruler of one fourth of the Holy Land) and governor of Galilee. (After the death of king Herod the Great, the Romans divided the territory of Palestine into four parts, and put a governor in charge of each part. Herod Antipas received Galilee from the emperor Augustus). The prophet of God John openly denounced Herod for having left his lawful wife, the daughter of the Arabian king Aretas, and then instead cohabiting with Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip (Lk 3:19-20). On his birthday, Herod made a feast for dignitaries, the elders and a thousand chief citizens. Salome, the daughter of Herod, danced before the guests and charmed Herod. In gratitude to the girl, he swore to give her whatever she would ask, up to half his kingdom. The vile girl on the advice of her wicked mother Herodias asked that she be given the head of John the Baptist on a platter. Herod became apprehensive, for he feared the wrath of God for the murder of a prophet, whom earlier he had heeded. He also feared the people, who loved the holy Forerunner. But because of the guests and his careless oath, he gave orders to cut off the head of St. John and to give it to Salome. According to Tradition, the mouth of the dead preacher of repentance once more opened and proclaimed: "Herod, you should not have the wife of your brother Philip." Salome took the platter with the head of St. John and gave it to her mother. The frenzied Herodias repeatedly stabbed the tongue of the prophet with a needle and buried his holy head in a unclean place. But the pious Joanna, wife of Herod's steward Chuza, buried the head of John the Baptist in an earthen vessel on the Mount of Olives, where Herod had a parcel of land. (The Uncovering of the Venerable Head is celebrated (February 24). The holy body of John the Baptist was taken that night by his disciples and buried at Sebastia, there where the wicked deed had been done. After the murder of St. John the Baptist, Herod continued to govern for a certain time. Pontius Pilate, governor of Judea, later sent Jesus Christ to him, Whom he mocked (Lk 23:7-12). The judgment of God came upon Herod, Herodias and Salome, even during their earthly life. Salome, crossing the River Sikoris in winter, fell through the ice. The ice gave way in such a way that her body was in the water, but her head was trapped above the ice. It was similar to how she once had danced with her feet upon the ground, but now she flailed helplessly in the icy water. Thus she was trapped until that time when the sharp ice cut through her neck. Her corpse was not found, but they brought the head to Herod and Herodias, as once they had brought them the head of St. John the Baptist. The Arab king Aretas, in revenge for the disrespect shown his daughter, made war against Herod. The defeated Herod suffered the wrath of the Roman emperor Caius Caligua (37-41) and was exiled with Herodias first to Gaul, and then to Spain. The Beheading of St. John the Baptist, a Feast day established by the Church, is also a strict fast day because of the grief of Christians at the violent death of the saint. In some Orthodox cultures pious people will not eat food from a flat plate, use a knife, or eat food that is round in shape on this day. Today the Church makes remembrance of Orthodox soldiers killed on the field of battle, as established in 1769 at the time of Russia's war with the Turks and the Poles. После Крещения Господня святой Иоанн Креститель был заключен в темницу Иродом Антипой, четвертовластником, правителем Галилеи. В день своего рождения Ирод устроил пир вельможам, старейшинам и тысяченачальникам. Дочь Иродиады Саломия плясала перед гостями и угодила Ироду. В благодарность девице он поклялся дать все, чего она ни попросит, даже до половины своего царства. Скверная танцовщица по совету своей злобной матери Иродиады просила дать ей тотчас же на блюде голову Иоанна Крестителя. Ирод опечалился. Он боялся гнева Божия за убийство пророка, которого сам раньше слушался. Боялся он и народа, который любил святого Предтечу. Но из-за гостей и неосторожной клятвы он повелел отрубить голову святому Иоанну и отдать Саломии. По преданию, уста мертвой главы проповедника покаяния еще раз открылись и произнесли: "Ирод, не должно тебе иметь жену Филиппа, брата твоего". Саломия взяла блюдо с главой святого Иоанна и отнесла своей матери. Неистовая Иродиада исколола язык пророка иглой и закопала его святую главу в нечистом месте. Но благочестивая Иоанна, жена домоправителя Иродова Хузы, погребла святую голову Иоанна Крестителя в глиняном сосуде на горе Елеонской, где у Ирода был собственный участок земли (обретение честной главы празднуется 24 февраля). Святое тело Иоанна Крестителя взяли в ту же ночь его ученики и погребли в Севастии, там, где совершилось злодеяние. После убийства святого Иоанна Крестителя Ирод продолжал править еще некоторое время. Понтий Пилат, правитель Иудеи, посылал к нему связанного Иисуса Христа, над Которым он насмеялся (Лк. 23, 7-12). Суд Божий совершился над Иродом, Иродиадой и Саломией еще при их земной жизни. Саломия, переходя зимой реку Сикорис, провалилась под лед. Лед сдавил ее так, что она висела телом в воде, а голова ее находилась надо льдом. Подобно тому, как она некогда плясала ногами по земле, теперь она, словно пляшущая, производила беспомощные движения в ледяной воде. Так она висела до тех пор, пока острый лед не перерезал ее шеи. Труп ее не был найден, а голову принесли Ироду с Иродиадой, как некогда принесли им главу святого Иоанна Предтечи. Аравийский царь Арефа в отмщение за бесчестие своей дочери двинул войско против Ирода. Потерпев поражение, Ирод подвергся гневу римского императора Кая Калигулы (37-41) и был вместе с Иродиадой сослан в заточение в Галлию, а потом в Испанию. Там они были поглощены разверзшейся землей. В память усекновения главы святого Иоанна Крестителя Церковью установлен праздник и строгий пост как выражение скорби христиан о насильственной смерти великого Пророка. WHEN ARE CONFESSIONS HEARD AT ST. VLADIMIR’S? • Those living in the Ann Arbor area who are not sick, elderly, or very young: Following Vigil on Saturdays and Eves of Feasts or by appointment • Those living far from Ann Arbor or the sick, elderly, or very young: Sunday or Feast Day mornings from 9:00 - 9:45 a.m. or by appointment • Confessions are not heard after 9:45 a.m. on Sundays or Feast Days unless the weather is especially poor. HOW OFTEN SHOULD ONE PARTAKE OF THE HOLY MYSTERIES? According to the canons of the Holy Church we must partake of the Holy Mysteries not less than once per year. However, our bishops have asked us to increase our frequency of communing to not less than once per fasting period, or four times per year. Fr. Gregory asks that we all make the effort to commune not less than once every four to six weeks at the very least. Waiting longer than four to six weeks allows us to begin to forget our sins (or, alternatively, to become comfortable with these sins as part of our lives), and thus can be spiritually unhealthy. Please note that one may confess more frequently than one communes – the two Mysteries are not always partaken of together. Children should partake of the Holy Mysteries at every given opportunity. Those children who reach the age when they begin to confess (usually about 7 years old) should still commune at every opportunity, although this does take an extra effort on the parents’ part to get them to church early enough to confess. LAST WEEK'S COLLECTION “Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him.” (I Corinthians 16:2) We know that our parishioners make every effort to support our parish. Thus, we feel it is important that our parishioners know exactly what it is that we need as a parish to meet our financial obligations, and whether we fulfill that need. Below is the information on last week’s collection, along with our financial obligation (what we need to pay bills, salaries, etc.). • Amount needed weekly to meet our financial obligations: $900 • Collection for Sunday, September 4: $560 • Deficit from budget since July 1, 2005: $1,921 25th ANNIVERSARY COMMITTEE FORMED – HELP NEEDED! At St. Vladimir’s we will celebrate our 25th anniversary on July 28, 2006. This date is much closer than you think! There is much to be planned and much to be done before our parish feast day, and for this reason the 25th Anniversary Committee has been formed. Ken Doll has graciously agreed to oversee this effort for our parish, but we will need the contribution of the skills and labor of many of our parishioners to make this the best 25th anniversary ever celebrated by any parish in the Russian Orthodox Church. YOU can make it happen! Please volunteer to help with the anniversary committee’s efforts and be generous when funds are raised to support this important effort in our parish’s history. This person is more or less home-bound and needs some help getting around and with some light house work. Several helpers are needed and the person in question is willing to both train those who would like to help as well as pay for these services. This is an opportunity for several people to work approximately 20 hours per week. Please contact Fr. Gregory if you are interested. ADULT GROUP FIRST MEETING SEPTEMBER 14 An adult group is being formed at the home of Panagioti and Patricia Apostolou with Fr. Gregory’s blessing. The group will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays to read and discuss spiritual literature (and to sample and cook lenten treats!). Group readings and discussions will be held in English, but if there is suitable interest a Russian language group will be formed as well. CHURCH SCHOOL BEGINS SEPTEMBER 16 The St. Vladimir's Church School is slated to begin on Friday, September 16 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Classes begin at 5:45 p.m. (an opening prayer is held at this time) and end at 8:15 p.m. St. Vladimir's Church school is for all children in our parish from 4-18 years old. Classes are held weekly in both Russian and English (depending on your child's needs). Classes to be offered this year include Law of God, Russian Language, Russian History, Russian Culture, Drama, and more! Она почти не выходит на улицу, и ей нужна помощь, чтобы выходить из дома и делать некоторую несложную работу по дому. Нужно несколько помощников - и она готова обучить желающих и оплачивать их услуги. Это даст возможность нескольким людям работать примерно 20 часов в неделю. Если вы заинтересованы – обратитесь к о. ЗАНЯТИЯ В ПРИХОДСКОЙ ШКОЛЕ НАЧИНАЮТСЯ 16 СЕНТЯБРЯ Занятия в Свято-Владимирской приходской школе начнутся 16 сентября, в Свято-Николаевской греческой приходе в Lodi Township. Занятия начинаются в 5:45 вечера (в это время читается молитва перед началом занятий) и заканчиваются в 8:15 вечера. Приходская школа предназначена для всех детей наших прихожан в возрасте от 4 до 18 лет. Занятия проводятся каждую неделю на русском и английском языках (в зависимости от того, на каком языке говорит ребенок). В этом году будут преподаваться следующие предметы: Закон Божий, русский язык, история России, культура России, драма и другие! ПРИХОДСКОЙ ШКОЛЕ ТРЕБУЮТСЯ ПРЕПОДАВАТЕЛИ Свято-Владимирской приходской школе всегда требуются преподаватели – как для регулярных занятий, так и для замещения. Имейте в виду, что с детей преподавателей приходской школы плата за обучение не взимается! КОГДА МОЖНО ИСПОВЕДОВАТЬСЯ В СВЯТО-ВЛАДИМИРСКОМ ХРАМЕ? • Тем кто живет в Анн-Арборе или окрестностях, кроме пожилых, больных и детей: После всенощной или по предварительной договоренности • Тем кто живет далеко от Анн-Арбора, пожилым, больным и детям: Воскресенья и праздничные дни: 9:00 - 9:45 утра или по предварительной договоренности • Исповеди заканчиваются в 9:45 утра, кроме тех дней, когда очень плохая погода. КАК ЧАСТО СЛЕДУЕТ ПРИЧАЩАТЬСЯ СВЯТЫХ ТАЙН? По канонам Святой Церкви мы должны причащаться Святых Тайн не реже одного раза в год. Однако наши епископы рекомендуют причащаться не реже чем один в каждый пост, то есть четыре раза в год. О. Григорий просит всех сделать над собой усилие и причащаться каждые четыре-шесть недель. Если проходит более шести недель, то мы начинаем забывать свои прегрешения, или же наоборот, свыкаемся с ними как с частью нашей жизни, и наносим вред нашей душе. Пожалуйста, имейте в виду, что исповедоваться можно чаще, чем причащаться – эти два таинства не всегда совершаются вместе. Дети должны причащаться Святых Тайн при каждой возможности. Дети, достигшие возраста когда они должны исповедоваться (как правило около 7 лет) также должны причащаться всегда, когда есть возможность, несмотря на то, что родителям придется привозить их в церковь пораньше, чтобы дети успели на исповедь. Родители – Записывайте своих детей в приходскую школу! Молодежь – Вступайте в молодежный кружок Преп. Германа Аляскинского! Дамы – Вступайте в сестричество св. Ксении Петербуржской! Господа – Вступайте в братство преп. Иоанна Шанхайского и Сан-Францисского! Взрослые – Приходите на беседы в кружок для взрослых! Жертвуйте в приходской фонд помощи нуждающимся!
