Литургия: 10:00 a.m. After Liturgy ~ После литургии: Church School Registration ~ Регистрация учащихся приходской школы After Liturgy ~ После литургии: Readers’ Meeting ~ Собрание чтецов St. Alypy – Iconographer of the Kiev Caves August 17/30 Patron Saint of our Ruling Hierarch, Archbishop Alypy of Chicago & Detroit Saint Alypius of the Caves, one of the first and finest of Russian iconographers, was a monastic disciple of St. Nikon (March 23), and from his youth he pursued asceticism at the Kiev Caves monastery. He studied the iconography of the Greek masters, and from the year 1083 beautified the Caves monastery church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos. St. Alypius painted icons for free. If he learned that in some church the icons had become worn, he took them with him and restored them without charge. If it so happened that they paid him for his work, the monk set aside one part for obtaining iconographic materials, the second part he distributed to the poor, and only the third did he keep for himself. St. Alypius was never famous, and he painted icons only to serve God. He was ordained a hieromonk and was known for working miracles even in his lifetime. St. Alypius healed a Kievan man suffering from leprosy and decay of the body by anointing the wounds of the sick man with paints prepared for the painting of icons. Many icons painted by the monk were glorified with miracles. A particular instance is known, when angels of God helped him in the holy task of painting icons. A certain man of Kiev, having built a church, entrusted two monks of the Caves to commission the icons for it. The monks concealed the money and said nothing to St. Alypius. Having waited a long time for the carrying out of the commission, the man went to the igumen to complain about the monk. Only then did they discover that he had not heard of the commission. When they brought the boards given by the customer, it turned out that beautiful images had already been painted on them. When the church built for the icons was consumed by fire, all of the icons remained unharmed. One of these icons (the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos) received the title Vladimir-Rostov (August 15), was taken by Great Prince Vladimir Monomakh (1113-1125) to a church he had built at Rostov. Another time, an angel painted an icon of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, when St. Alypius lay deathly ill. The angel accepted the soul of St. Alypius (he died on August 17 not earlier than the year 1114). He was buried in the Near Caves. On the right hand of St. Alypius the first three fingers were folded perfectly alike, and the last two were bent to the palm. It seems that he died while signing himself with the Sign of the Cross. One of the icons of St. Alypius, the Most Holy Mother of God with the Infant-Savior, surviving from the time of Sts. Anthony and Theodosius of the Kiev Caves is now preserved in the State Tretyakov Gallery (named the Sven, and celebrated May 3 and August 17). Иконописанию он учился у греческих мастеров, с 1083 г. украшавших Печерскую церковь в честь Успения Пресвятой Богородицы. Преподобный Алипий писал иконы даром. Если узнавал, что в какойнибудь церкви иконы обветшали, брал их к себе и поправлял безмездно. Если же случалось, что ему платили за труд, преподобный одну часть тратил на приобретение материалов для иконописания, вторую раздавал нищим и лишь третью оставлял себе. Преподобный Алипий никогда не был праздным и оставлял иконописание только ради Божественной службы. Он был посвящен в сан иеромонаха и известен даром чудотворений еще при жизни: преподобный Алипий исцелил киевлянина, страдавшего проказой и гниением тела, помазав раны больного красками, приготовленными для писания икон. Много икон, писанных преподобным Алипием, прославились как чудотворные. Известны некоторые случаи, когда Ангелы Божии помогали ему в святом деле писания икон. Один киевлянин, построив церковь, поручил двум печерским инокам заказать для нее иконы. Иноки утаили деньги и ничего не сказали преподобному Алипию. Прождав долгое время выполнения заказа, киевлянин обратился к игумену с жалобой на преподобного, и тут только обнаружилось, что он и не слышал о заказе. Когда принесли доски, данные заказчиком, оказалось, что на них уже написаны прекрасные лики. Когда сгорела построенная для икон церковь, все иконы остались целыми. Одну из этих икон (Успение Пресвятой Богородицы), получившую наименование Владимирская-Ростовская (празднование 15 августа), взял великий князь Владимир Мономах (1113-1125) для построенного им в Ростове храма. В другой раз Ангел написал икону в честь Успения Пресвятой Богородицы, когда преподобный Алипий лежал в предсмертной болезни. Тот же Ангел принял душу преподобного Алипия (скончался 17 августа не позже 1114 года). Он был погребен в Ближних пещерах (память Собора 28 сентября). У правой руки преподобного Алипия три первые перста сложены совершенно равно, а два последние пригнуты к ладони - в таком молитвенном осенении себя крестным знамением скончался преподобный. Одна из икон преподобного Алипия - Пресвятой Богородицы с Младенцем-Спасителем и с предстоящими преподобными Антонием и Феодосием Печерскими хранится ныне в Государственной Третьяковской галерее (именуемая Свенской, празднование 3 мая и 17 августа). WHEN ARE CONFESSIONS HEARD AT ST. VLADIMIR’S? • Those living in the Ann Arbor area who are not sick, elderly, or very young: Following Vigil on Saturdays and Eves of Feasts or by appointment • Those living far from Ann Arbor or the sick, elderly, or very young: Sunday or Feast Day mornings from 9:00 - 9:45 a.m. or by appointment • Confessions are not heard after 9:45 a.m. on Sundays or Feast Days unless the weather is especially poor. HOW OFTEN SHOULD ONE PARTAKE OF THE HOLY MYSTERIES? According to the canons of the Holy Church we must partake of the Holy Mysteries not less than once per year. However, our bishops have asked us to increase our frequency of communing to not less than once per fasting period, or four times per year. Fr. Gregory asks that we all make the effort to commune not less than once every four to six weeks at the very least. Waiting longer than four to six weeks allows us to begin to forget our sins (or, alternatively, to become comfortable with these sins as part of our lives), and thus can be spiritually unhealthy. Please note that one may confess more frequently than one communes – the two Mysteries are not always partaken of together. Children should partake of the Holy Mysteries at every given opportunity. Those children who reach the age when they begin to confess (usually about 7 years old) should still commune at every opportunity, although this does take an extra effort on the parents’ part to get them to church early enough to confess. LAST WEEK'S COLLECTION “Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him.” (I Corinthians 16:2) We know that our parishioners make every effort to support our parish. Thus, we feel it is important that our parishioners know exactly what it is that we need as a parish to meet our financial obligations, and whether we fulfill that need. Below is the information on last week’s collection, along with our financial obligation (what we need to pay bills, salaries, etc.). • Amount needed weekly to meet our financial obligations: $900 • Collection for Sunday, August 28: $773 • Deficit from budget since July 1, 2005: $1,581 25th ANNIVERSARY COMMITTEE FORMED – HELP NEEDED! At St. Vladimir’s we will celebrate our 25th anniversary on July 28, 2006. This date is much closer than you think! There is much to be planned and much to be done before our parish feast day, and for this reason the 25th Anniversary Committee has been formed. Ken Doll has graciously agreed to oversee this effort for our parish, but we will need the contribution of the skills and labor of many of our parishioners to make this the best 25th anniversary ever celebrated by any parish in the Russian Orthodox Church. YOU can make it happen! Please volunteer to help with the anniversary committee’s efforts and be generous when funds are raised to support this important effort in our parish’s history. This person is more or less home-bound and needs some help getting around and with some light house work. Several helpers are needed and the person in question is willing to both train those who would like to help as well as pay for these services. This is an opportunity for several people to work approximately 20 hours per week. Please contact Fr. Gregory if you are interested. READERS’ MEETING SEPTEMBER 11 Those who presently read and especially those who are interested in reading at St. Vladimir’s during the Divine Services are urged to attend a meeting of all the readers on Sunday, September 11 immediately following the Divine Liturgy. CHURCH SCHOOL REGISTRATION IS SEPTEMBER 11 Registration for this year’s fall semester of our parish school is set for Sunday, September 11. Immediately following the Divine Liturgy a Moleben for the beginning of school will be held (all parents, children, and teachers should attend the Moleben/Prayer Service), with registration occurring immediately afterwards. Teachers, parents, and students will have the opportunity to interact during the registration. Refreshments will be served. Tuition costs this year remain the same as last: $50 for one child per family, $25 each for two children, $12.50 each for three children or more. ADULT GROUP FIRST MEETING SEPTEMBER 14 An adult group is being formed at the home of Panagioti and Patricia Apostolou with Fr. Gregory’s blessing. The group will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays to read and discuss spiritual literature (and to sample and cook lenten treats!). Group readings and discussions will be held in English, but if there is suitable interest a Russian language group will be formed as well. CHURCH SCHOOL BEGINS SEPTEMBER 17 The St. Vladimir's Church School is slated to begin on Saturday, September 17 at St. Joseph Catholic School in Dexter, MI (same place as last year). Classes begin at 1:30 p.m. (an opening prayer is held at this time) and end at 4:00 p.m. St. Vladimir's Church school is for all children in our parish from 4-18 years old. Classes are held weekly in both Russian and English (depending on your child's needs). Classes to be offered this year include Law of God, Russian Language, Russian History, Russian Culture, Drama, and more! Она почти не выходит на улицу, и ей нужна помощь, чтобы выходить из дома и делать некоторую несложную работу по дому. РЕГИСТРАЦИЯ УЧАЩИХСЯ ПРИХОДСКОЙ ШКОЛЫ – 11 СЕНТЯБРЯ В воскресенье, 11 сентября, состоится регистрация учащихся приходской школы на первое полугодие. Сразу после Божественной литургии состоится молебен по случаю начала учебного года (на молебне и богослужении следует присутствовать всем детям, родителям и преподавателям), после чего состоится регистрация. В процессе регистрации преподаватели, родители и учащиеся смогут познакомиться. Будут предложены закуски. Плата за обучение остается такой же, как в прошлом году: $50 за одного ребенка, по $25 за двух детей, и по $12.50 за трех и более детей. Занятия в школе начнутся 17 сентября (см. объявление ниже). Григория в доме у Панагиоти и Патриции Апостолу будет собираться кружок для взрослых. Кружок будет собираться в 7:30 вечера по средам, чтобы читать и обсуждать духовную литературу (а также дегустировать и готовить постные блюда!). Чтения и обсуждения будут на английском языке, однако, при наличии достаточного числа желающих, будет организован и русскоязычный кружок. ЗАНЯТИЯ В ПРИХОДСКОЙ ШКОЛЕ НАЧИНАЮТСЯ 17 СЕНТЯБРЯ Занятия в Свято-Владимирской приходской школе начнутся 17 сентября, в помещении католической школы Св. Иосифа в Декстере (там же, где в прошлом году). Занятия начинаются в 1:30 дня (в это время читается молитва перед началом занятий) и заканчиваются в 4:00 вечера. Приходская школа предназначена для всех детей наших прихожан в возрасте от 4 до 18 лет. Занятия проводятся каждую неделю на русском и английском языках (в зависимости от того, на каком языке говорит ребенок). В этом году будут преподаваться следующие предметы: Закон Божий, русский язык, история России, культура России, драма и другие! ПРИХОДСКОЙ ШКОЛЕ ТРЕБУЮТСЯ ПРЕПОДАВАТЕЛИ Свято-Владимирской приходской школе всегда требуются преподаватели – как для регулярных занятий, так и для замещения. Имейте в виду, что с детей преподавателей приходской школы плата за обучение не взимается! КОГДА МОЖНО ИСПОВЕДОВАТЬСЯ В СВЯТО-ВЛАДИМИРСКОМ ХРАМЕ? • Тем кто живет в Анн-Арборе или окрестностях, кроме пожилых, больных и детей: После всенощной или по предварительной договоренности • Тем кто живет далеко от Анн-Арбора, пожилым, больным и детям: Воскресенья и праздничные дни: 9:00 - 9:45 утра или по предварительной договоренности • Исповеди заканчиваются в 9:45 утра, кроме тех дней, когда очень плохая погода. КАК ЧАСТО СЛЕДУЕТ ПРИЧАЩАТЬСЯ СВЯТЫХ ТАЙН? По канонам Святой Церкви мы должны причащаться Святых Тайн не реже одного раза в год. Однако наши епископы рекомендуют причащаться не реже чем один в каждый пост, то есть четыре раза в год. О. Григорий просит всех сделать над собой усилие и причащаться каждые четыре-шесть недель. Если проходит более шести недель, то мы начинаем забывать свои прегрешения, или же наоборот, свыкаемся с ними как с частью нашей жизни, и наносим вред нашей душе. Пожалуйста, имейте в виду, что исповедоваться можно чаще, чем причащаться – эти два таинства не всегда совершаются вместе. Дети должны причащаться Святых Тайн при каждой возможности. Дети, достигшие возраста когда они должны исповедоваться (как правило около 7 лет) также должны причащаться всегда, когда есть возможность, несмотря на то, что родителям придется привозить их в церковь пораньше, чтобы дети успели на исповедь. Родители – Записывайте своих детей в приходскую школу! Молодежь – Вступайте в молодежный кружок Преп. Германа Аляскинского! Дамы – Вступайте в сестричество св. Ксении Петербуржской! Господа – Вступайте в братство преп. Иоанна Шанхайского и Сан-Францисского! Взрослые – Приходите на беседы в кружок для взрослых! Жертвуйте в приходской фонд помощи нуждающимся!
