GENITIVE PLURALS • If the word has an ending, take it off. – (add a fill vowel if necessary) • If the word doesn’t have an ending, add one: – -ей for words ending in ж, ч, щ, ш or ь – -ов / -ев for hard consonants or й If the word has an ending, take it off: книг а мест о страниц а мужчин а слов о Sometimes underlying й appears or you have to add ь to keep softness: лекци й я задани й е е общежитий недель я дын ь я If there is no ending in NSg add -ей for words ending in ж, ч, щ, ш or ь карандаш ей учител ьей гараж ей плащ ей ноч ей ь If there is no ending in NSg add -ов / -ев / -ёв for words ending in hard consonants or й стол ов абзац ев кроликов музейев гениев й Often Genitive plural formation requires FILL VOWELS Fill vowels often appear in the Nom. Sg., though you may not think of them this way: GSg отца NPl отцы but NSg отец GSg подарка NPl подарки but NSg подарок GSg котёнка PSg о котёнке but NSg котёнок These fill vowels you know, and it’s easy to remove them. In GPl you may have to insert them, which means you have to choose окно окон девушка девушек канарейка канареек американка американок The fill vowel is usually e овца овец деревня деревень письмо писем сестёр сестра But it’s о if there’s a velar (к, г, х) around, and к is very common: окно окон кухня кухонь пятёрка пятерок англичанка англичанок But spelling rules still trump this rule: ляжка ляжек кошка кошек девочка девочек бабушка бабушек Don’t forget that й+о=е майка маек тройка троек скамейка скамеек копейка копеек Sometimes underlying й appears AND you get a fill vowel: статья статей семья семей свинья свиней This is not the ending -ей and there is no ь!
