Установите соответствие между заголовками 1 – 8 и текстами A – G.
Занесите свои ответы в таблицу. Используйте каждую цифру только
один раз. В задании один заголовок лишний.
1. Love yourself.
5. Communication.
2. Think positive.
6. Enthusiasm.
3. Taking the blame.
7. Getting your way.
4. Body language.
8. Winning targets.
A. Your thoughts and feelings are important, so communicating them is vital. You are more
likely to get what you want if you can ask in a direct, open way. Even if you don’t get your
way, you’ll feel stronger in yourself as a result. Increase your communication skills by writing
down your views and desires. Say them to yourself in a mirror or record them on cassette.
B. The way we use our bodies conveys even more about our feelings than the things we
say. Think how you use your body when talking. Direct eye contact, upright posture,
emphasizing gestures and a lively tone of voice are signs of assertiveness. Looking away
from people, crossing your arms and fidgeting are signs which say your self-esteem is low.
C. Remember how you feel when you’re doing something you feel strongly about. It’s
impossible to feel bad about yourself at such moments. Think what you feel most strongly
about and develop these things into as many interests as possible. Maybe you could join a
social, political or campaign organization – how about drama, a competitive sport or an
absorbing hobby?
D. Give yourself regular treats, as if you’re spoiling someone you love. Buy that special
outfit, go for a slap-up meal, award yourself a day in bed with a book – anything which makes
you feel good. If you can indulge others, you can indulge yourself. It’ll give you a warm glow –
and boost your self-esteem.
E. Life’s winners set themselves targets they know for sure they can reach. Losers set
themselves impossible goals and thus their low self-esteem is confirmed when they inevitably
fail. So set yourself realistic goals. For example, if you feel the need to diet, don’t aim to lose
ten kilos in two weeks. Instead, try for an attainable loss – say one kilo in a week. Winners
recognize that each step towards a goal is a success in itself.
F. Sufferers of low self-esteem tend to have negative thoughts about themselves: ‘I’m a
failure, I’m boring…’ and so on. If you don’t respect yourself, how can you expect others to
respect you? So concentrate on your positive traits and write them down – maybe you are a
sympathetic listener, or a caring parent. Ask a close friend to list your pluses. The two lists
could well reveal bonuses you never knew you had.
G. Constantly taking the blame when things go wrong is a sign of low self-esteem. We all
make mistakes. But if you’re for ever saying: ‘It’s my fault,’ or ‘I shouldn’t have said it,’ and
‘I’ve done it again,’ you’ll end up self-conscious and embarrassed and self- esteem will
plummet. If you’ve blundered, admit it. But remember, one blunder doesn’t make you a
blunderer for ever. Learn from your mistake and avoid it next time.

For those who are too busy to spend as long exercising at the gym as they would like - and for
those who are a bit lacking in the willpower department - there is good news. Researchers have
found that fitness enthusiasts can reduce the time they spend working out by two-thirds A_____.
A study involving male weightlifters has suggested that there is no point in exercising for long
periods. Those who exercised less saw a significant decrease in body fat. The study focused on
16 students aged 19 to 23, B_______. They were split into two groups. Both carried out upperbody training three times a week for eight weeks. One group did one series of eight repetitions,
C_______. At the end of the study, both groups had improved ‘significantly’ in terms of
muscular strength, said the researchers.
Report author Dr. Julien Baker said: ‘This study indicates that it is unnecessary D______and that
a shorter work-out may achieve the same results. Many fitness classes are now shorter in
duration and promise results in quicker times, and there is much research to suggest that interval
training - intense activity E_______- and shorter, high-intensity workouts - performing at 80 per
cent of your maximum aerobic capacity - can achieve maximum results in shorter periods. This
kind of research may see a change in the way we exercise and show that it may be better to do a
number of regular express workouts which would fit in with the busy lives that many lead.’
Dr Baker said he also hoped the findings would encourage more people F________.
‘The more people we get doing a little exercise which is beneficial, as opposed to fewer people
doing a lot of exercise, the better it will be,’ he added.

Julie Lewis from Oregon, in the United States, is wearing an expensive-looking pair of
boots. They are yet fashionable. To look at them you would never know that they were made
entirely of recycled materials. Julie owns her own shoemaking company and has achieved a
long-term ambition to turn waste into something useful. The shoes are made from all sorts of
otherwise useless materials, including textile scraps, rubber from tyres, and plastic bags. Julie
knows that she cannot solve the world's environmental problems single-handed, but nonetheless
she feels she is doing good at a local level.
Recycling has become extremely popular in the US, particularly in recent years when the
number of recycling schemes has increased by 500 percent. 65 percent of aluminium cans are
recycled plus a quarter of paper and 20 percent of glass. The enthusiasm for reusing materials
has come from the realisation that Americans produce far more waste per person than most
Europeans; a total of 200 million tons a year. This is twice as much as Germany, for example,
and it would be enough to fill a line of dustbin lorries stretching eight times around the world.
America even exports its waste. Taiwan buys used paper to make more paper and Japan uses
American scrap metal and makes it into new cars, which it then sells back to the US. Two thirds
of the remaining waste is buried in landfill sites. Disposal of waste poses a major problem.
Landfill sites can cause pollution of water supplies. And as sites fill up, new ones need to be
found. Some rubbish is burnt but this pollutes the atmosphere. The obvious answer, then, is to
recycle more. Recycling is already big business - Julie Lewis being a perfect example. Her
company has already attracted millions of dollars worth of investment. Recycled products are
no longer seen as poor quality goods but as desirable alternatives. A hugely successful scheme
has been operating in Palm Beach County since 1988. Rubbish is sorted into different
categories. Paper, glass and plastic arc- sold to recycling firms. Kitchen waste is used to power a
generator which supplies electricity to 30,000 houses. Other materials are used to make soil,
which is then used for growing fruit and vegetables.
There are of course economic arguments against recycling. It can be expensive to run the
schemes. And as Lynn Scarlett, a government advice from Los Angeles argues, it does not make
economic or environmental sense to transport materials for recycling from areas which still have
plenty of landfill space.
Manufacturers in Germany are trying to solve the problem at the production stage, mainly by
looking at how their goods are packaged. Soap powders are now more concentrated and packed
in small containers, toothpaste tubes are sold without boxes and plastic wrapping has been
reduced.
In a time when newspapers and TV news are filled with depressing stories of environmental
disasters, it is important to remind people, especially children, that they can make a difference.
After all, they can recycle their waste every day of their lives.
A15. Julie Lewis has always wanted
1) to run her own business.
2) to be involved in recycling.
3) to look fashionable.
4) to wear expensive shoes.
A16. Americans now recycle far more than they used to because
1) they are competing with Germany.
2) they want to make a profit from recycling.
3) they need more aluminium.
4) they produce more rubbish than some other countries
A17. What does "this" in line 12 refer to?
1) the type of rubbish produced
2) the amount of rubbish produced
3) Americans enthusiasm
4) the re-use of waste materials
A18. Julie Lewis is a “perfect example” of the fact that
1) re-using waste is a money-making activity.
2) more rubbish should be burnt.
3) women can attract investment.
4) recycled products can be of high quality.
A19. What does the Palm Beach Country scheme involve?
1) making energy out of waste
2) selling fruit and vegetables for profit
3) producing plastic bottles
4) opening new recycling business
A20. One of the arguments against recycling was:
1) it makes no sense using landfill sites
2) it damages the environment
3) no one is interested in running the schemes
4) it can be uneconomical
A21. German manufacturers
1) are concentrating on improving soap powers
2) sell toothpaste in boxes instead of tubes
3) have cut down on packaging
4) are trying to make goods cheaper
