Special interest in classical antiquity appeared in Russia at the turn of the 20th century. D. Merezhkovsky
was one of the progressive people who suggested that life in Russia should be changed. He translated many
plays of ancient tragic writers, some of which were staged at the Alexandrinsky Theatre. One of his ideas
was to create a theatre-mystery. This new type of theatre was to revive believing in God.
