Господь послал Архангела Гавриила к Деве Марии. Когда Ей исполнилось четыренадцать лет, Она была отдана из Иерусалимского храма восьмидесяитшестилетнему старцу Иосифу, чтобы он хранил Ее девство. Она жила в Назарете, когда к Ней явился Архангел и благовестил, что Она зачнет и родит Сына, дасть Ему имя Эмманул – С нами Бог.

to the Virgin Mary, was long awaited not only by the
people of the Old Testament but also by those in
Heaven. This joyful news is for everyone, for each
one of us living today.
Before the advent of Christ, people who
died, could not enter the heavenly mansions. These
were closed to them. But when the Lord sent the
Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary everything
changed. When the Virgin Mary was 14 years old
she was taken out of the Temple and betrothed to the
86 year old elder, Joseph, so that he might guard her
virginity. The Virgin was living in Nazareth when
the Archangel appeared to her and announced the
good news that she would conceive and give birth to
a son, and give Him the name Emmanuel—“God is
with us.”

написаны Духом Божиим, и тем же Духом Божиим Святые Отцы истолковывали Священное Писание. Сейчас нечасто встрешиь этот Дух Божий, и поэтому люди не понимают святоотеческие творения. Они смотрят на все оком мирским, они не вглядываются дальше, у них нет той широты, которую подают вера и любовь. Преподобный Арсений Великий не менял воду, в которой замачивал пальмовые ветви, и она очень плохо пахла. Но где нам понять, что за дивный источник был из этого чана с протухшей водой! “Ну уж этого­то я понять не могу!» ­ скажет кто­то. Говорящий так не хочет потерпеть и всмотреться в эту воду получше, чтобы увидеть, нет ли в ней чего­то еще, но отвергает ее, потому что не понимает.
Если вмешивается рассудочность, то человек не понимает ни Евангелия, ни Святых Отцов. Искажается орган духовного чувства, и человек обесценивая своей рассудочностью и Евангелие, и Святых Отцов, доходит до того, что говорит: «Сколько же лет люди без проку мучают себя аскезой, постом, прочими лишениями!» Но говорить так – это хула. Как­то раз Отцу Паисии спросли: «Почему Матерь Божия не сотворила чуда на острове Тинос и итальянцы взорвали крейсер «Элли» в день Успения? В день Успения, 1940 итальянской подводной лодкой был потоплен стоявший на рейде в порту греческго о. Тинос крейсер греческих ВМС «Элли». Итальянцы торпедировали «Элли» во время высадки моряков на берег для участия в торжествах, посвященных Пресвятой Богородице. Верломный акт был совершен за два с половиной месяца до объявления Италией войны Греции. После потопления «Элли», поняв, что война с Италией неизбежна, греки стали усиленно готовиться к защите Отечества.
Но, попустив это зло, Матерь Божия сотворила большее чудо. Взрыв «Элли» привел греков в негодование. Греки поняли, что для итальянцев нет ничего святого и поэтому после, с криками «Ура» они прогнали их со своей земли. А если бы итальянцы не совершили этого злодеяния, то,не понимая нечестия итальянцев, греки могли бы сказать: «Они ведь тоже народ верующий, онè наши друзья». А сейчас приходят люди с рассудочным мышлением и говорят: «Что же Матерь Божия чуда­то не сделала, а?» Ну что им на это скажешь? Увязать Евангелие с человеческом здравым смыслом невозможно. В основе Евангелия лежит любовь. В основе здравого смысла заложена выгода. В Евангелии написано: «Если кто­то принудит тебя идти одну версту, то иди две». Разве в этом виден здравый смысл? В этом, скорее, видно умопомрачение. Поэтому те, кто хочет увязать Евангелие со здравым смыслом, заходят в тупик. Люди судят и рядят посредством рассудочности, здравого смысла, поэтому они запутываются, и Евангелие в их жизнь не входит. Люди смотрят на вещи поверхностию и поэтому истолковывают все на свой лад.
The Holy Fathers saw everything in spiritual terms and with their spiritual eyes. The writings of the Holy Fathers were written by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and this is how they were able to explain the Scriptures. Unfortunately today, rarely do we have this encounter with the Divine Spirit and subsequently people do not understand the writings of the Fathers. Many see things from a worldly perspective and for the most part are unable to see any further. They do not possess that broadness of vision which faith and love give us.
For example, St Arsenius the Great never changed the water in the tub he used to soak his palm branches (for making baskets – ed) with the result that the water produced a terrible stench. How are we to understand that despite this physical condition, pure water flowed miraculously from the putrid liquid in the tub? Our natural response is: We simply can’t understand it! (meaning, it can’t be true). However when we say this, we do not want to stop and patiently look further into this mystery but rather reject the whole story as nonsense, for it goes beyond common sense. mystery, you will not be able to understand the Gospels or the Holy Fathers. it is written: If someone asks you to go a mile, then go two.” (Matt 5. 41).
Relying on common sense, our spiritual perception becomes distorted and we begin to evaluate the Gospels and the Holy Fathers, for example, on a rational level instead of a spiritual level. The result of this reasoning is that we end up saying: “Look how many years people have tortured themselves,
wasting their lives with ascetic practices, fasting and all kinds of deprivations!” But to talk like this is not only foolishness but borders on blasphemy.
Those who judge everything by common sense, by humanistic thinking, end up becoming confused with the result that the Gospel does not figure in their life. They look at things on a surface level and fall into the trap of interpreting everything according to their own tune.
Once someone asked Elder Paissios why the Mother of God did not miraculously intervene when the Italians sank the Greek cruiser Hellene on the Island of Tinos. The elder explained that by the Mother of God allowing this evil to pass, a greater miracle occurred later.
On the Feast of the Dormition in 1940, an Italian submarine sank the cruiser Hellene while the crew were attending the Liturgy on the Island of Tinos. This treacherous act occurred two and a half months before war was declared between Greece and Italy. After the sinking of the Hellene war was unavoidable and the Greek people began in earnest to prepare to defend their homeland.
Blowing up the Hellene caused an outrage across the nation. Through this attack the Greeks understood that for the Italians, nothing was sacred and later they did in fact drive the enemy from their land. The elder continued by saying that if the Italians had not done this evil act, the Greeks would not have recognized the dishonesty of the Italians and would have declared: “The Italians are surely believers too – they are our friends!” Still today people say: “Why didn’t the Mother of God perform a miracle on Tinos?” “What can we say to such people?” asked Elder Paissios.
To restrict the Gospels to common sense is impossible, for the foundation of the Gospels is love. On the contrary, the foundation of common sense is personal gain and selfishness. In the Gospel Душевная тревога происходит от диавола

Надо всегда с любочестием говорить себе: ”Если ты не можешь прочесть Повечерие полностью, то прочитай половину или третье.” И в следующий раз надо стараться не слишком утомляться днем. Должно подвизаться насколько возможно с любочестием и во всем полагаться на Бога. А Бог Свое дело сделает. Ум должен всегда быть близ Бога. Это самое лучшее делание из всех.

into anxiety, but should always say to
themselves in a positive manner: “If you cannot
read the entire Compline, read one half or one
third of it.” And the next time they should try
not to get too tired during the day. They should
struggle, as much as they can, in a positive
manner, entrusting everything to God, and God

will intervene. The mind should always be close
to God. This is the best kind of study.
