It has been designed to cause the machine to operate in a specified manner under operator control, and has been configured for a particular combination of machine tool hardware and controller. Renishaw has no control over the exact program configuration of the controller with which the software is to be used, nor over the mechanical layout of the machine. Before you begin About this manual This manual contains detailed information on the Renishaw GoProbe inspection cycles. GoProbe provides an easy and intuitive way for customers who are new to probing to get started by using single-line commands for part setting cycles. The software is designed to work with a range of Renishaw touch-trigger probes and to be compatible with a range of Renishaw software programs. Use of non-Renishaw probes is not supported. GoProbe uses easy-to-follow steps to deliver simplified and consistent instructions for part setting cycles. The aim is to guide the user through the basic steps of probing and generating single-line commands for part setting. This manual contains separate sections for manual and automated operational modes where appropriate. Probe set-up cycles include a probe check cycle and probe calibration cycles. The probe check cycle can be used to establish if the probe is set up and ready to use. This manual should be used in conjunction with the other components of the GoProbe training kit and the GoProbe app. It is recommended that users complete the self-study e-learning course before using the GoProbe cycles. CAUTION: GoProbe cycles cannot be used with Inspection Plus where Inspection Plus has been loaded from an archive folder during installation or when the multiple probe option is enabled. GoProbe cycles do not support vector part setting cycles. However, vector calibration cycles are provided for use with Inspection Plus. NOTE: All examples in this programming manual use metric values. vi Before you begin Five steps of manual probing and probe set-up G65P9901M1.A1.S54.; 1 2 3 4 5 The process is split into five easy steps. 1 Bring the probe into the spindle. 2 Manually jog the probe to the start position (typically 10 mm from the feature). 3 Press MDI. 4 Enter the single-line command. 5 Press cycle start. vii Before you begin Single-line command overview The single-line command is used to define probing cycles for part setting and probe set-up. Choose and insert relevant inputs. Inputs will vary depending on the cycle. 4. Choose work offset to set (S): S54 = G54, S55 = G55 etc. If no S input is selected, the measurement takes place but the WCS is not set. NOTE: Extended work offsets (G54.1PX) are supported but are not used in this manual. Example: For a bore with a 10 mm diameter, the single-line command is: G65P9901 M2. D10. S54.; Cycle Diameter Work offset viii Before you begin Constructing an automated single-line command G65P9901 MM.C .X .Y .Z .A .S .; 1. Insert G65P9901. 2. Choose and insert cycle number (M). 3. Choose C0. or C1. (automated mode, end of cycle option). 4. Establish probe start position (X, Y and Z co-ordinates relative to the active WCS). 5. Insert I, J and K inputs if appropriate (feature location relative to the active WCS). 6. Choose and insert relevant optional inputs. Inputs will vary depending on the cycle. 7. Choose work offset to update (S): S54 = G54, S55 = G55 etc. If no S input is selected, the measurement takes place but the WCS is not updated. NOTE: Extended work offsets (G54.1PX) are supported but are not used in this manual. Example: For a boss with a 30 mm diameter and a measuring depth of −15, the single-line command is: G65P9901 M3. C1. X0. Y0. Z10. D30. W−15. S54.; Cycle Mode Probe start position Diameter Measuring depth Work offset NOTES: On some controllers, the end of block character (;) is not required. The single-line commands shown in the above examples for both manual and automated part setting include a space between each input for visual clarity. This space should be omitted when entering the command into the CNC machine tool controller. Within this programming manual, all whole numerical values contained within single-line command examples end with a decimal point to ensure that the CNC controller reads these values as mm rather than μm. Some controllers may operate correctly with these decimal points omitted, however, care should be taken to determine that this is the case before running any programs. Where the numerical is a decimal fraction, for example 50.002, there is no need to include a further decimal point at the end of the value. Further examples: . D = 30.5, the single-line command is G65P9901M3.C1.X20.Y20.Z20.D30 5W−15.S54.; . D = 30.05, the single-line command is G65P9901M3.C1.X20.Y20.Z20.D30 05W−15.S54.; ix Before you begin Work co-ordinate system (WCS) The WCS acts as a reference point which the user, or machine, works from during part setting. During manual part setting, the WCS is set, and during automated part setting, the WCS is updated. Example: M3: Boss (automated mode) 1. The diagram below shows a 30 mm boss with a probe start position local to the active WCS. The measuring depth, defined by the W input, is set at 15 mm. −15 (W) 10 (Z) = Active WCS W=−15 mm Assuming the active WCS is set on top of the boss, as shown above, the values of the X, Y and Z inputs are X0, Y0, Z10. The probe is to return to the safety plane. The single-line command is therefore: G65P9901 M3. C1. X0. Y0. Z10. D30. W−15. S54.; 20 (Z) 10 The diagram below shows a 30 mm boss with a probe start position remote from the active WCS. The measuring depth, defined by the W input, is set at 15 mm. −15 (W) 2. = Active WCS 20 (Y) W=−15 mm 20 (X) Assuming the active WCS is set on the corner of the part, as shown above, the values of the X, Y and Z inputs are X20, Y20, Z20. The probe is to return to the safety plane. The single-line command is therefore: G65P9901 M3. C1. X20. Y20. Z20. D30. W−15. S54.; x Before you begin Selecting between manual and automated mode The differences between running probing cycles in manual and automated mode are highlighted below. The aim of this section is to help you decide which scenarios are best suited to using the probe in manual or automated mode. Manual mode: • The user manually moves (jogs) the probe to the start position, approximately 10 mm from the feature. • The single-line command is manually entered in MDI mode. • The S input defines the WCS to be set. If no S input is selected, the measurement takes place but the WCS is not set. • The location to which the WCS is set depends on the feature being measured and the start position of the probe. • At the end of the cycle the probe returns to the start position. NOTE: Probe set-up cycles are only available in manual mode. Automated mode: • An active WCS is a prerequisite to running an automated part setting cycle. • The cycle automatically moves the probe to the start position. X, Y, Z inputs determine the co‑ordinates of the probe start position. These are relative to the active WCS. • The single-line command is embedded into a cutting or probing program. • Cycles can be linked together for improved efficiency. • The S input selects the WCS to be updated. If no S input is selected, the measurement takes place but the WCS is not updated. • The selected WCS is updated. (Typically the WCS to update is the active WCS.) • Additional optional inputs provide a range of in-process probing options. • At the end of the cycle the probe returns to either the safety plane or the home (reference) position (determined by the C input). Calibration data storage and the optional inputs available within the probe set-up program are also covered in this chapter. Key points for probe set-up cycles: • The spindle probe check cycle enables the user to check that their probe system is ready for use. • The probe calibration cycles enable the user to set up their probe so that it is ready for use. • The user manually moves (jogs) the probe to the start position. • The single-line command is manually entered in MDI mode. • At the end of each cycle the probe returns to the start position. When to calibrate: New probe or stylus After breakage After poor results or at regular intervals to compensate for mechanical and environmental changes to the CNC machine Calibration data storage: Calibration data for the spindle probe is stored in common machine variables. The exact location depends on the setting of #111, the variable base number defined during software installation. Example: If #111 is set to 500 #500 = Stylus ball radius in X axis #501 = Stylus ball radius in Y axis #502 = X axis stylus offset #503 = Y axis stylus offset 1-1 Chapter 1: Probe set-up and calibration Probe set-up optional inputs B = Diameter of spindle probe stylus ball Applies to cycles M101, M102, M103, M104, M105 and M110. Defines the nominal diameter of the spindle probe stylus ball. The default value is 6 mm. Example: B4. indicates the use of a 4 mm diameter (2 mm radius) stylus ball. D = Distance in X or Y for Z touch Applies to cycle M110. Defines the X or Y distance from the start position for the Z touch. The default value is 10 mm. Example: D5. sets the X or Y position for the Z touch to be 5 mm from the start position. F = Fast positioning feedrate limit Applies to cycle M110. Defines the fast positioning feedrate limit. The default value is 12000 mm/min. Example: F8000. sets the maximum possible positioning feedrate to be 8000 mm/min. H = Measurement repeatability value Applies to cycle M110. Defines the measurement repeatability value required from the probing system. Adjusting this value will influence the value displayed in #100. The default value is 0.005 mm. Example: H0.003. sets the measurement repeatability value to 0.003 mm. Q = Overtravel distance Applies to cycles M101, M102, M103, M104, M105 and M110. Defines the maximum distance to travel past the target surface. The default overtravel distance is 5 mm in all axes. If these values are unsuitable, then using the Q input will allow the probe to adjust the distance it travels whilst searching for a surface. Example: Q20. sets an overtravel distance of 20 mm. 1-2 Chapter 1: Probe set-up and calibration U = Spindle probe XY overtravel limit Applies to cycle M110. Defines the XY overtravel limit for the spindle probe used during SupaTouch optimisation. The default value is 11 mm. Example: U15. sets the XY overtravel limit to 15 mm. V1. = Vector calibration Applies to cycles M101 and M102. Inclusion of the V1. input instructs the cycle to perform vector calibration. Where no V1. input is defined, vector calibration is not performed. Vector calibration data is stored in machine common variables, #[base number +10] to #[base number +17]. W = Spindle probe Z overtravel limit Applies to cycle M110. Defines the Z overtravel limit for the spindle probe used during SupaTouch optimisation. The default value is 5 mm. Example: W7. sets the Z overtravel limit to 7 mm. Z = Z position for X or Y touch Applies to cycle M110. Defines the Z-axis position below the top surface for the X or Y touch during SupaTouch optimisation. The default value is 5 mm. Step 4: Insert the single-line command. NOTE: If the probe is shorter than the tool, a Q input is required in order to extend the probe search distance and find the surface. Step 5: Press cycle start. NOTE: The machine will retract and bring the probe into the spindle. The probe will then touch the surface in the same location that the master tool (or tool of known length) was previously manually positioned. The calculated feedrates are displayed as follows: #100 Maximum permissible measuring feedrate (in mm/inch) #101 Maximum permissible Z-axis positioning feedrate (in mm/inch) #102 Maximum permissible X-axis or Y-axis positioning feedrate (in mm/inch) Three options are available to the user: • Press cycle start to accept the values; • Edit the values and press cycle start, or • Press reset to abandon optimisation and use the standard two-touch measuring method. When cycle start is pressed, the optimised values are automatically loaded to #500 variables (always in millimetres). 1-12 Chapter 2: Manual part setting Chapter 2 Manual part setting Introduction This chapter shows the five steps of probing and the single-line command for each manual part setting cycle. It also introduces the optional inputs and cycle outputs available within the manual part setting program. Key points for manual part setting cycles: • The user manually moves (jogs) the probe to the start position, approximately 10 mm from the feature. • The single-line command is manually entered in MDI mode. • The S input defines the WCS to be set. It also introduces the optional inputs and cycle outputs available within the automated part setting program. Key points for automated part setting cycles: • An active WCS is a prerequisite to running an automated part setting cycle. • The cycle automatically moves the probe to the start position. X, Y, Z inputs determine the co‑ordinates of the probe start position. These are relative to the active WCS. • The single-line command is typically embedded into a cutting or probing program. • Cycles can be linked together for improved efficiency. • The S input selects the WCS to be updated. If no S input is selected, the measurement takes place but the WCS is not updated. • The selected WCS is updated. (Typically, the selected WCS to update is the active WCS.) • Additional optional inputs provide a range of in-process probing options. • At the end of the cycle the probe returns to either the safety plane or the home (reference) position – determined by the C input. 3-1 Chapter 3: Automated part setting Automated part setting overview Automated part setting enables the user to embed a probing cycle into a metal cutting program. Several cycles can be linked together to remove the need for manual inspection during the cutting process. As a result, the time taken to produce a large batch of parts is reduced. An operator would typically select manual part setting when machining a single component, and automated part setting when machining a large batch of the same component. An important difference between manual and automated part setting cycles is that for manual part setting cycles, the cycle sets the WCS, whereas for automated part setting cycles, the WCS is updated. NOTE: In automated mode an active WCS is a prerequisite to running an automated part setting cycle. The active WCS can be an approximate value that is subsequently updated following the probing cycle. Setting an approximate/active work offset Typically, to set an approximate work offset, the co-ordinates from the home (reference) position to the position of the WCS must be determined. These co-ordinates can be found using a simple manual part setting cycle or by using a hand measuring tool. Spindle home (reference) position (X0, Y0, Z0) Active WCS (e.g. G54) Machine position = X600, Y−500, Z−400 Once the active work offset is set, the start position of the probe can be determined. 3-2 Chapter 3: Automated part setting C0./C1. inputs The use of the C0. or C1. input indicates that the part setting cycle is to be used in automated mode. If the C0. or C1. input is not used, then the cycle operates in manual mode. Both C0. and C1. inputs will bring the part setting probe into the spindle and switch the probe on; the difference between C0. and C1. is the behaviour of the probe at the end of the cycle. Reference Probe turn on Reference Probe turn on C0. After the cycle is complete, the probe will retract to the machine reference (home) position and switch off. C1. After the cycle is complete, the probe will retract to the safety plane position and remain on ready for the next probing cycle. The C1. input is typically used to reduce cycle times when linking probing cycles together. NOTE: The safety plane height is defined in the user settings macro O8898 and is relative to the active work offset. X, Y, Z inputs These inputs represent the co-ordinate location of the probe start position relative to the active WCS. The values for X and Y inputs are from the centre of the stylus ball; the value for the Z input is from the tip of the stylus. Refer to the individual cycles for a detailed explanation. B = Angle tolerance Applies to cycles M6, M7, M8, M10, M11 and M15. The addition of a B input allows an angle tolerance to be set. This input defines the maximum allowable angle between two points on a line. NOTE: If the B input is used and the angle is out of tolerance, the machine stops and an alarm is raised. The true angle information is only visible in #139 for the X angle and #142 for the Y angle; the data in #102 or #103 is invalid. Example: M6: Corner (internal) When using the M6 cycle, the angles of the X and Y axes are displayed in #102 and #103 respectively. When a part is correctly aligned to the machine axes, #102 should be 0 and #103 should be 90, however, these values will differ when a part is not correctly aligned – as illustrated below. The addition of a B input means that the machine will stop if the measured angle exceeds the tolerance defined. In the example below, if the angle tolerance is set to 0.5° (B0.5), but the measured value is 0.6°, the machine will stop and an alarm will be raised indicating an out of tolerance angle error. The part can then be realigned. Some machines have the capability to automatically adjust the cutting angle to compensate for alignment errors. 0.6° ~10 mm E P2 P1 ~10 mm P3 ~10 mm P4 0.6° D NOTE: The values in #139 and #142 will be 0.6° and 90.6° respectively. 4-6 Chapter 4: Part setting optional inputs D = Distance between the two measuring points in the X axis E = Distance between the two measuring points in the Y axis Omitting the D and/or E input from cycles M6 and M7 alters the number of probe points. It is recommended that, for an M6: Corner (internal) cycle or an M7: Corner (external) cycle, the D and E inputs are used to create a 4-point corner cycle. This is the most accurate way to measure the angles in both the X and Y axes, and is the reason why the D and E inputs are recommended for the default M6 and M7 cycles. Omitting either of the D or E inputs will result in a 3-point corner cycle. Omitting both the D and the E input will result in a 2-point corner cycle. Refer to the individual cycles for a detailed explanation. H = Size tolerance (automated part setting only) Applies to cycles M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M9, M12 and M13. NOTE: For the M1: Single surface cycle, the S input must be omitted when using the H input. This is the value of the allowable measurement error. If the measurement error is greater than the value of the set tolerance, the machine will alarm and stop. Example: M2 (bore) H0.02 will set a tolerance of ±0.02 mm. When measuring a bore of 40 mm, the acceptable upper tolerance is 40.02 and the acceptable lower tolerance is 39.98. The diagram below shows a bore with an internal diameter of 40 mm with a set tolerance of ±0.02 mm. The actual measurement is 39.96 mm: an error of 0.04 mm. As this error is greater than the set tolerance, the machine will alarm and stop. The measurement information is only visible in #138; the data in #100 or #101 is invalid. 4-8 Chapter 4: Part setting optional inputs I = Adjusts the WCS in the X axis (manual part setting only) Applies to cycles M1 (X), M2, M3, M4 (X), M5 (X), M6, M7, M8 (X), M10, M11, M12, M13 and M14. Adjusts the X-axis position of the WCS. −10 (I) Example: I−10. adjusts the WCS by 10 mm in the X direction. J = Adjusts the WCS in the Y axis (manual part setting only) Applies to cycles M1 (Y), M2, M3, M4 (Y), M5 (Y), M6, M7, M8 (Y), M10, M11, M12, M13 and M14. Adjusts the Y-axis position of the WCS. −10 (J) Example: J−10. adjusts the WCS by 10 mm in the Y direction. K = Adjusts the WCS in the Z axis (manual part setting only) Applies to cycles M1 (Z), M9 and M14. 5 (K) Adjusts the Z-axis position of the WCS. Example: K5. adjusts the WCS by 5 mm in the Z direction. Q = Overtravel distance Applies to all cycles. Defines the maximum distance to travel past the target surface. The default overtravel distance is 5 mm in all axes. If these values are unsuitable, then using the Q input will allow the probe to adjust the distance it travels whilst searching for a surface. Example: Q20. sets an overtravel distance of 20 mm. 4-9 Chapter 4: Part setting optional inputs R = Radial clearance Applies to cycles M3, M5, M11 and M13. This is the clearance value when moving down the side of a feature. The default value is 5 mm. This input is used when an obstacle is located within a feature. The probe start point and probe path can be changed using the R− input in conjunction with the W input. NOTE: For the M1: Single surface cycle, the S input must be omitted when using the T input. This is the tool offset number that will be updated by the error that is found during the cycle. Example: M2: Bore T08. will add the error found by the measurement cycle to tool offset number 8. The diagram below shows a bore with an internal diameter of 40 mm. The actual measured value is 39.98. The error of 0.02 (diameter) or 0.01 (radius) will be added to tool offset number 8. Adjusts the default probe points in the Y axis. The points that can be altered depend on the cycle. Refer to the individual cycles for a detailed explanation. 4-11 Chapter 4: Part setting optional inputs W = Distance from the probe start position to the measurement point in −Z Applies to cycles M2, M4, M6, M7, M8, M10 and M12. This input defines the distance from the probe start position to the position in the Z axis at which measurement takes place. This must be a negative value. The probe start position defines the height that the probe uses when it travels across the part. The W input is compulsory for M3, M5, M9 and M11 cycles but is optional for the other cycles stated above. It can be used when a clamp or feature obstructs the path as shown in the example below. Example: M8: (Line) The diagram below shows the default probe path for M8. D In the image below, a feature is now obstructing the default probe path. The W input can be used to set the incremental distance to the Z−axis measuring height from the start position. W− D 4-12 Chapter 5: Alarms Chapter 5 Alarms Introduction This chapter contains information on how to identify an alarm number that may be displayed on your control, the meaning and likely cause of each alarm, and the typical actions you need to take to clear the fault. Alarms include: • GoProbe alarms. • Controller alarms. • General alarms. 5-1 Chapter 5: Alarms GoProbe alarms The most common alarms are shown below: 1*CALIBRATION*REQUIRED 1 Calibration required. 2*PROBE*START*UP*FAILURE 2 Probe start-up failed. 3*SKIP*FUNCTION*TEST*FAILED 3 SKIP function test failed. 5*STYLUS*RUNOUT*EXCESSIVE 5 Stylus run-out excessive (> 0.2 mm). FILE*NOT*FOUND/NUMBER*NOT*FOUND File not found (software not loaded). Controller alarms Alarm messages are not displayed on the screen, only the alarm number. The alarm numbers displayed are (500 + n), where n is the alarm number. Example: 92 (PROBE OPEN) is alarm 592. General alarms Format: #148 1 (OUT OF TOL) 1 (OUT OF POS) 1 (ANGLE OUT OF TOL) 1 Updates the offset if the cycle start button is pressed to continue 1 (DIA OFFSET TOO LARGE) 1 (UPPER TOL EXCEEDED) 1 (EXCESS STOCK) 2 4 5 No offset update if the cycle start button is pressed to continue 3 6 NOTE: The alarms described above indicate that an out-of-tolerance situation has occurred. Pressing cycle start will cause the machine to ignore this and continue as normal. This is entirely at the user’s discretion. 5-2 Chapter 5: Alarms Format: 86 (PATH OBSTRUCTED) Cause: The probe has made contact with an obstruction. This only occurs during a protected positioning move. Action: Edit the program. Clear the obstruction and start again from a safe position. This is a reset condition. Format: 88 (NO FEEDRATE) Cause: This only occurs during a protected positioning move. Action: Edit the program. Insert the F___ code input and start again from a safe position. This is a reset condition. Format: 89 (NO TOOL LENGTH ACTIVE) Cause: G43 or G44 must be active before the cycle is called. Action: Edit and start again from a safe position. This is a reset condition. This is a reset condition. Format: 92 (PROBE OPEN) 92 (PROBE ALREADY TRIGGERED) Cause: This alarm occurs if the probe is triggered unexpectedly. The stylus may be in contact with a surface or the probe has failed to reseat. This could be due to swarf trapped around the probe eyelid. Action: Clear the fault and start again from a safe start position. This is a reset condition. Format: 93 (PROBE FAIL) 93 (PROBE DID NOT TRIGGER) Cause: This alarm occurs if the probe did not trigger during the move. Either the surface was not found or the probe has failed. Action: Edit the program and start again from a safe start position. This is a reset condition. Format: 99 (TOOL OFFSET ACTIVE) Cause: The system has detected that the tool offset is active during a spindle probe length calibration. Action: Deactivate the tool offset and run the cycle again. This is a reset condition. Format: 101 (PROBE STARTUP FAILURE) Cause: The probe has failed to switch on. Action: Ensure that the batteries are in good working order. Ensure that a credit token is present and in good working order (Primo only). Ensure that the switch-on/switch-off method (M-code or spin on/spin off) matches the machine and/or probing settings. Ensure that the probe is not currently in a triggered state (touching a part, tool or object) before running a cycle. This is a reset condition. 5-4 Chapter 5: Alarms Format: 106 (CALIBRATION REQUIRED) Cause: The system has detected that the stored calibration data is not within the defined range. Action: Run your preferred calibration method(s). This is a reset condition. Format: 192 (3 PT Z PLANE DELTA OUT OF TOLERANCE) Cause: The system has detected that the difference between the lowest point and highest point, when using the M9: 3-point plane cycle, is greater than the tolerance limit set with the H input. Action: Investigate the cause of the lowest point and highest point being outside the tolerance limit. Rectify and start again. This is a reset condition. Format: 193 (SKIP FUNCTION TEST FAILED) Cause: The system has detected that the SKIP function is not working. Action: Contact the machine tool builder. Format: 196 (M INPUT ERROR) Cause: An invalid M input has been used. Action: Use a valid M input in the call line and start again. This is a reset condition. Format: 197 (F INPUT ERROR) Cause: An invalid F input has been used. Action: Use a valid F input in the call line and start again. This is a reset condition. Format: 198 (STYLUS RUNOUT EXCESSIVE) Cause: During probe calibration the software has detected that the spindle probe stylus is running out at more than 0.2 mm. Action: Adjust the spindle probe run-out. Reset and run the calibration again. This is a reset condition. 5-5 Chapter 5: Alarms Format: 199 (SPINDLE PROBE NOT IN SPINDLE) Cause: The software has detected that a tool other than a spindle probe is in the spindle when attempting to run a measuring cycle. Action: Tool change the spindle probe into the spindle and/or ensure that the spindle offset number is set correctly inside program O8898. This is a reset condition. 5-6 Chapter 6: Reference information Chapter 6 Reference information Introduction This chapter provides a wide range of reference information that includes: • Editing program O8898 (REN INSPECTION START CONFIG). • Editing program O8899 (REN INSPECTION END CONFIG). • Adjusting the first touch feedrate for the spindle probe. NOTE: All setting program values must be in metric units. 6-1 Chapter 6: Reference information Editing program O8898 (REN INSPECTION START CONFIG) This program contains important settings data that can be customised for each installation. Values and commands in this program are used by GoProbe cycle P9901. Tool offset for probe #29=1. (PROBE OFFSET) Edit to select the tool offset number of the probe. Stand-off distance #30=10. (STAND OFF) Edit to set the default stand-off distance. In manual cycles, stand‑off is the distance at which the probe is positioned from the target surface. A value of 10 mm is recommended. Safety plane height #31=50. (DEFAULT SAFETY PLANE) Edit to set the safety plane height. Select a safe height in the Z axis that the probe will retract to, relative to the active WCS, after performing a measurement cycle. This value is used when measuring multiple features in automatic mode and with the C1. option selected. Provision is made within GoProbe cycles to automatically load the probe into the spindle. To enable this function, relevant commands must be added in the designated area. See the example below. NOTE: This edit is required when measuring in automatic mode with either the C0. or C1. option selected.
