All of us have heard about afterlife though have you ever imagined “beforelife”? The recent Walt Disney Studios’ computer-animated film Soul produced by Pixar Animation Studios in 2020 gives us an opportunity to wander off such a fancy world. The story centres around a pianist, Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx) and an unborn soul named 22 (Tina Fey). Joe dies in the accident and is sent to the Great Beyond. Trying to escape from his destiny he enters the Great Before where souls are taught to fulfill their badges giving them a power to go to the Earth. Joe is assigned to train a soul named 22, who is skeptical about the human’s life. The plot is unpredictable and gripping. Together they attempt to achieve their own goals –whilst the former has to ignite a spark in 22 and then use her badge for returning to a human life, the latter doesn’t mind following everyone’s suit and having found her spark though she hasn’t got a will to live on the Earth. Well, I would rather stop here so that you would be able to enjoy yourself by the rapid development and the intriguing ending of the film. The songs are hilarious and reflect the narrative of the story brilliantly. The voice cast was excellent, which is quite important in animated films as we don’t see real actors. Computeranimated characters and scenes can’t show us a real life in its fullness but they have got advantages in presenting imaginary worlds. Overall though, the work of designers and artists is impressive, I would say that the life on the Earth – streets and buildings, flats and restaurants are a bit gloomy, especially compared to the places in the Great Before. As we are taken on the journey, the cartoon leaves us in no doubt about not only the value of believing in yourself and never giving up on your dreams but also the significance of friendship and helpfulness. It is a definite must-see animated film for anyone who enjoys fantasy.
