Verbs in Russian. The Infinitive.
What is a Verb?
• A verb is a part of speech that expresses a physical or mental action (он
читает - he reads, он верит - he believes); state or condition (он был
дома - he was at home).
• In dictionaries verbs are listed in the infinitive form. In a sentence the
infinitive is used in specific contexts, for example: Я хочу спать-I want to
sleep.
• Most Russian infinitives end in -ть: читать - to read, быть - to be.
• A few verbs have the infinitive ending -ти or -чь. Examples: идти - to go.
• There is a group of reflexive verbs that have the ending –ться.
Examples: одеваться-to dress (oneself)
• The past, present and future tenses are formed from the infinitive.

The Past Tense
Verbs in the past tense are used for actions that took place before now.
The past tense indicates the gender of the subject in the singular. In the
plural the gender is not indicated.
The past tense of verbs is formed from the Infinitive. Study the
formation of the past tense:
Masculine читать (to read) ->он читал (he was reading)
Feminine читать (to read)-> она читала(she was reading)
Plural читать (to read)-> они читали(they were reading)
Past Tense endings:
-л, -ла, -ли

This week you will have to make up your own story
about activities your family members like or do not like
to do.You will need to record your story and post it to
the forum. Make at least 10 sentences with two activities
for every family member. Make sure to use new
verbs играть, делать, слушать, любить, ходить,
смотреть, бегать. You can include your grandma,
grandpa, friends, etc. if you do not have enough immediate
family members. Practice speaking with your coach.
