The «oriental» features in the Rakhmaninov music have evolved over the years. If the early works of
the composer are more «oriental» in nature – open, evident (which is reflected in the names of the works or
in applying folklore fragments, for instance), his mature-period works can be characterized by harmonious
unity of the Russian and Oriental origins.

This article covers the field of Russian military emigration. The article is based on the extensive
studies of archival documents and the analysis of memoirs literature (on the materials of the Russian Army
General P.N. Wrangell and civilian population). There has been an attempt to illustrate the number of the
repatriates, the France’s policy, the policy of the Soviet authorities and the General Headquarters to the
