MILITARY OPERATIONS OF THE CANADIAN ARMY
IN EUROPE IN 1940 – 1941
The paper deals with one of the less studied in the national historiography episodes of the Second World War, i.e.
participation of the Canadian troops in the European operations of the United Kingdom military forces between 1940 and
1941. Having studied official Canadian materials, memoirs and research the author describes the participation of Canadian
troops in the defence of Britain, Iceland, Gibraltar, as well as evacuation of Spitsbergen (Operation “Gauntlet”). The main
attention is focused on the changes in the structure of the Canadian “overseas” troops, their tasks and functions in the
abovementioned operations. In addition, the author analyses the interaction of military dominion with colleagues from the
metropolis. The study of these facts has led to the conclusion that during the period under consideration the main trends
of development and operation of Canadian land forces throughout the world conflict were shaped. The first and most important of them is pursuit of maximum independence which was not always successful; the second is participation in minor
secondary operations and playing “second role” until 1944.
Keywords: Canada, World War II, Canadian Army, defence of Iceland, defence of Gibraltar, Operation “Gauntlet”.
