Course Description and Requirements:
Elementary Russian Through Video is an introductory course in Russian language and culture
based on the video/textbook series Live from Russia! which introduces us to an American photographer
on his first trip to Moscow and to his new Russian friends. In the first semester, students should reach
the ACTFL Novice-Mid speaking proficiency level by mastering the Cyrillic alphabet, learning some
basics of Russian grammar, and building a foundation of necessary vocabulary and conversational
expressions. At the Novice-Mid proficiency level, students are able to understand and respond to
direct questions and communicate on simple, everyday topics. Completion of the full year of
Elementary Russian at William & Mary brings many of our students into the Intermediate-Low
speaking proficiency level making it possible to succeed in the William & Mary 6-week summer
program in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The class meets five times per week and attendance is mandatory. 4 or more absences will
detract from you participation grade; more than 15 absences will result in an automatic F for the
course. Because class participation is instrumental for your success in this course all absences,
including absences with a medical excuse, will count toward these totals. If you miss a class
because of illness, you are responsible for contacting the instructor or a classmate for any homework
assigned and materials covered that day. All assignments must be turned in on time. You will be
graded based on your class participation, written and oral assignments, quizzes, and exams. No makeup exam will be given without a medical excuse, and all make-up work must be completed in a
timely fashion.
W&M Honor Code Infractions:
All work including written assignments, quizzes, and exams must be your own work,
completed without the aid of unauthorized software and devices or another individual's help. Please
review the W&M Honor Code Infractions at:
