A long time ago, when the world was
much younger than it is now, people
told and believed a great many wonderful stories about incredible things
which neither you nor I have ever seen.
They often talked about a god called
Zeus, who was king of the sky and the
earth; and they said that he sat most of
the time amongst the clouds on the top
of a very high mountain Olympus
where he could look down and see everything that was going on in the earth
beneath. He liked to ride on the stormclouds and hurl burning thunderbolts
right and left among the trees and
rocks, and he was so very, very mighty
that when he nodded, the earth quake,
the mountains trembled and smoked,
the sky grew black, and the sun hid his
face.

Three beautiful Horae guarded the entrance to the high Olympus. Any time
the Gods descended to earth or rose to
the bright mansion of Zeus, Horae created a cloud covering the gates. There
was a wide stretched blue fathomless
sky high above the Olympus, which
poured with a golden light. There was
no rain, nor snow in the realm of Zeus;
always there was bright and joyful
summer.

There, on the ground, spring and summer were replaced by autumn and
winter, the joy and fun were replaced
by misery and grief. True, the gods
knew sadness, but it would soon pass,
and again descended on the joy on
Olympus.

Zeus had two brothers, both of them
terrible and great, but not nearly as
great as Zeus himself. The name of one
of them was Poseidon, and he was the
king of the sea. He had a glittering,
golden palace far down in the deep sea
-caves where the fishes live and the red
coral grows, and whenever he was angry the waves would raise mountain
high, and the storm-winds would howl
fearfully, and the sea would try to
break over the land.

The other brother was a sad, palefaced being, whose kingdom was underneath the earth, where the sun
never shone and where there was
darkness and weeping and sorrow all
the time. His name was Hades, and his
country was called the Lower World,
or the Land of Shadows. Men said that
whenever anyone died, Hades would
send his messenger to carry him down
into his cheerless kingdom. People
never spoke well of Hades for that reason, but were scared of him and
thought of him as the enemy of life. 3

кроме Зевса жили и другие боги.
Одна из них - Афродита, королева
любви и красоты. Другая - Афина королева воздуха, которая дала
людям мудрость и научила многим
полезным вещам. Также была
богиня Гера - жена Зевса, царица

правую руку от Зевса и давала ему
всевозможные советы. Был бог
Арес, великий воин, который
отличался храбростью в бою. Бог
Гермес был быстрым гонцом, у него
были крылья на шапке и ботинках,
он летал с места на место, как
летние облака гонимые ветром. А
кроме них, было много других, о

A great number of other gods lived
with Zeus amid the clouds on the
mountain top - so many that we can
name only a few. There was Aphrodite,
the queen of love and beauty. There
was Athena, the queen of the air, who
gave people wisdom and taught them
how to do many useful things. There
was Hera, the queen of earth and sky the wife of Zeus, who sat at the right
hand of Zeus and gave him all kinds of
advice. There was Ares, the great warrior, who delighted in battle. There
was Hermes, the swift messenger, who
had wings on his cap and shoes, and
who flew from place to place like the
summer clouds when they are driven
before the wind. And besides these,
there were many others about whom
you will learn soon enough, and about
who are told strange and beautiful stories.

They lived in glittering, golden mansions, high up among the clouds - so
high that the eyes of humans could
never see them. But they could look
down and see what humans were doing, and often they were said to leave
their lofty homes and wander unknown across the land or over the sea.

рассылал людям Зевс свои дары и
утверждал на земле порядок и
законы. В руках Зевса судьба людей;
счастье и несчастье, добро и зло,
жизнь и смерть - все в его руках. Два

дворца Зевса. В одном сосуде дары
добра, в другом - зла. Зевс черпал в
них добро и зло и посылал людям.

And of all these mighty folk, Zeus was
by far the mightiest. From Olympus
Zeus sent people their gifts and approved the land order and laws. In the
hands of Zeus, the fate of people, happiness and unhappiness, good and evil,
life and death - all in his hands. Two
large vessels stood at the gates of the
palace of Zeus. In one vessel, there
were gifts of kindness, in the other evil. Zeus drew from them good and
evil, and sent to people. Woe to the
man whom the gifts of thunder were
drawn only from the vessel with evil.
Grief to the one who violated the established order of Zeus on the ground
and did not comply with its laws.
When Zeus threateningly shifted his
bushy eyebrows, dark clouds then covered the sky. When Zeus was angry his
hair rose on his head, his eyes lit up
with intolerable splendor, he would
waive his right hand and the thunder
rumbled across the sky, fiery flashes of
lightning, and Olympus would tremble.

So the great king of men and gods Zeus
reigned surrounded by a host of bright
gods on Mount Olympus, maintaining
order and justice throughout the
world.
